Limburger cheese is a semi-soft, washed rind cheese from Belgium and Germany, made with pasteurized cow’s milk. The cheese was originally created by Belgian Trappist Monks in the 1800s in the Limburg region of Belgium. Due to its popularity, German cheesemakers in the Allgau region of Germany began making Limburger cheese and today, Germany is the largest producer of Limburger in the world.

Limburger is famous for its powerful, pungent aroma, caused by a particular strain of bacteria that grows on the surface of the cheese. But don’t let the funkiness keep you from trying this delicious cheese; the flavor is surprisingly mild and brie-like with a slight tang.
